JFK to your NoMad hotel: terminal pickup, train connections and the final leg
Start your JFK arrival plan with your terminal and the exact hotel address, then choose a rail connection or pickup option that works with your bags and arrival time. Reaching Manhattan is only part of the journey. For the worked example here, the destination is Ace Hotel New York at 20 West 29th Street, New York NY 10001. Compare the arrival options, then complete the route to that address and confirm what happens when you arrive.
Choose an arrival path for the address you booked
NoMad is the Manhattan neighborhood in this guide. Ace Hotel Brooklyn is a separate property, so keep the New York address visible when selecting a destination in a journey planner or car booking. A search result for the right brand in the wrong borough will give you a different arrival plan.
| Arrival option | Airport action | What remains before the hotel |
|---|---|---|
| AirTrain plus Long Island Rail Road | Connect at Jamaica and select a service to the Manhattan station you intend to use. | The station exit and final connection to West 29th Street; AirTrain and rail have separate charges. |
| AirTrain plus subway | Choose the connection and Manhattan stop against your hotel address and current service. | The station approach and hotel leg, including the stairs or elevators your party will need. |
| Yellow taxi | Follow the current terminal’s taxi pickup arrangements. | Confirm the destination and account for applicable charges beyond the regulated JFK–Manhattan base fare. |
| Ride-app or private-car product | Establish where that product collects arriving passengers at your terminal. | Any transfer to the pickup point and the conditions of the accepted car booking. |
Compare the work each option creates for your party. A traveler comfortable handling a suitcase through a rail transfer may make a different choice from someone who needs a particular accessible pickup arrangement. The destination still matters after that first choice: a rail ticket to Manhattan does not include an unspecified connection to every NoMad hotel.
If you are still deciding which room to book at the worked-example property, use the Ace Hotel New York room guide. Room categories and the airport arrival are separate decisions.
Follow the pickup instructions for your terminal
The same station name can appear in different arrival instructions. At Howard Beach, reaching a ride-app pickup lot and connecting to public transit are different tasks. Decide which one you are doing before following a sign or interpreting a fare.
For a Terminal 5 or 7 ride-app arrival
JFK’s Terminal 5 and 7 pickup notice, checked on October 30, 2026, directs ordinary arriving ride-app and car-service passengers to a designated Howard Beach lot using AirTrain. The airport describes that pickup transfer as free. It is a move to the car collection point, rather than a paid subway journey into Manhattan.
The notice also says ADA-accessible ride shares remain available at the terminal front. If that is the arrangement you need, confirm the actual pickup with the service and any assistance required through the airline. Do not substitute the ordinary pickup-lot transfer for an accessible arrangement you have requested.
Recheck the notice for your travel date and follow the instructions for your terminal and chosen product. This T5/T7 arrangement is not a description of every JFK terminal or of yellow-taxi boarding.
For a public-transit connection
For rail or subway travel, select the AirTrain connection that serves your onward journey. JFK identifies Jamaica and Howard Beach as public-transit connections, with an AirTrain fare at that boundary. The airport separately states that subway and railroad fares are additional.
Keep those components in your budget even if you can use contactless payment for part of the journey. A free airport movement to a pickup point does not establish a free onward rail trip, and using the same payment device does not by itself create a through ticket to the hotel.
Finish the rail journey at your hotel, not the Manhattan platform
For the West 29th Street example, one rail path to examine is AirTrain to Jamaica followed by an LIRR service to Penn Station. Check an actual inbound service for your arrival date and intended departure from Jamaica. The train’s destination matters: Penn Station and Grand Central Madison are different Manhattan endpoints, each leaving its own hotel leg.
Once you have selected the endpoint, continue planning to the booked address. Look at the station exit you intend to use and the route from there to the hotel entrance. You may decide to walk or use another connection, but make that choice with your luggage and party in mind. A journey estimate ending at the platform leaves out this part of the arrival.
The same principle applies if you choose the subway. Establish the Manhattan stop and the service operating when you expect to travel, then examine the final approach. Airport-bound instructions are useful for understanding connections, but their direction, train destination and terminal steps cannot simply be copied into an inbound journey.
For access needs, check each transfer and station exit rather than relying on a general accessible-route label. MTA advises checking elevator and escalator status. A working airport connection does not establish the condition of the exit you will use in Manhattan or the hotel approach.
Choose the rail fare for the service and circumstances you actually select. Keep the AirTrain amount separate, and add any further transport needed after the Manhattan station. This gives you a complete arrival comparison without assuming a particular departure, walking duration or universal door-to-door time.
Check what a car price and pickup actually include
The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission’s fare page, checked on October 30, 2026, lists a $70 base fare for yellow-taxi trips between JFK and Manhattan. Applicable surcharges, tolls and tips are additional. Treat that base as one part of the cost, rather than the amount you will necessarily pay to reach West 29th Street.
A ride-app or private-car booking is a different price comparison. Read the quote and its conditions for the product you are selecting; do not apply the yellow-taxi tariff to it. Confirm the destination, what the accepted amount includes, and how any change to the booking would be handled. A price described as fixed still needs to be read with its actual terms.
For a group, compare the complete party and luggage requirements. Multiplying a guessed rail fare and comparing it with a taxi base will not tell you which option costs less. Establish the real rail components and the actual car product before drawing that conclusion.
Also account for where the car journey begins. Being driven to the hotel can reduce the final connection in Manhattan while still requiring an airport transfer to the pickup point. That distinction can matter more to your choice than a broad “door-to-door” label in a transfer advertisement.
Confirm what happens when you reach the hotel
Ace Hotel New York’s official survival guide, checked on October 30, 2026, lists check-in after 3 PM. That timing is separate from your flight arrival and from a promise that a room will be ready earlier. If the planned journey gets you there before check-in, ask the property what arrangement is available for your actual booking.
Confirm luggage storage if you need it, and explain an intended late arrival if that affects your plans. Do not build the day around an assumed early room, storage entitlement or arrival procedure. Have the property’s response available with your reservation so the arrangement is clear after the flight.
Airport hotel-shuttle signs are another reason to name the actual property. Federal Circle has a hotel-shuttle area, but that does not establish an Ace Manhattan shuttle. Use a hotel transfer only when the property has confirmed the specific arrangement you intend to take.
You can check an Ace Hotel New York room offer on Expedia or check it on Trip.com. These are accommodation affiliate links; we may earn a commission if you book through them. They do not book an airport transfer. For the separate question of charges attached to a hotel stay, the NYC destination-fee guide explains what to examine in the room offer.
